New shoot for Military Spouse Magazine

From caring for his Doberman Pinscher and min-pin to shooting out on a gun range, Robert Duncan is a cowboy with one hat but many talents. Jeff Ross Photography spent the afternoon with Robert and his wife Donna and their son Cody in Fallon, Nevada. We learned a few things about gun safety. And respect for large Dobermans. Robert will be in an upcoming issue of Military Spouse Magazine , which features spouses of active duty service personnel.

Jeff Ross Photography was on location last week with our long time client Animal Artistry. February marks the wrap up the the Safari Club International convention held in Reno each year. Animal Artistry is a major exhibitor for the convention and displays many dioramas from its clients. AA has us come in to their facility and photograph their elaborate pieces before being shipped out to the clients.

Off to the Races

Jeff Ross Photography had the pleasure of spending a day in the studio and a day at the track with this brand new SuperLite class racing truck. The truck is built here in Reno by Speed Technologies. The SuperLites are the latest of several racing class that they build.

Ronnie Parker of Boost Creative is putting together a campaign for Speed Technologies’ new truck.

Animal Artistry Wraps up Safari Club International with a photo shoot

Stewart places the diorama in to position.

Jeff and Mike spent two day shooting big game last week. But instead of rifles they were armed with cameras and lights at Mike Boyce’s Animal Artistry. Animal Artistry is one of the nation’s leading taxidermy facilities handling game from the world wide. The elaborate dioramas are always challenging to light and photograph due to their complexity. Jeff strives to sculpt the light around the animals and enhance the life like details that Boyce has recreated in their poses.

Beaujolais Bistro

Mussels__0033-webRecently the owner of downtown Reno’s famous French restaurant, Beaujolais Bistro, contacted us to take some photographs to update their website.  Our job was to capture different dishes from their menu including Mussels, Duck, Steak Frites, Salmon Crepes, and Profiteroles.

The restaurant is a charming brick building close to 100 years old, so we used a piece of slate for the background in some of the photographs to maintain that rustic casual French bistro feel.

Photographing food is no different from photographing a piece of fine art or sculpture, you are just working with the Chefs artwork.

To bring out their vibrant colors vegetables are blanched in salt water and undercooked and meats are seared on the outside to maintain their fullness.

Food tends to look stale and old very quickly so we always have the chef prepare a sample dish that is similar in texture and look in order to get the lighting right.  Once everything is set up and ready to go, the final food plate is photographed within a couple of minutes.SalmonCrepe__0055-web

It’s almost impossible to photograph food for an entire day and not be hungry at the end of it, so the Chef made up an entree of Onglet Steak and a side of Frites for us to try.  The food was fabulous.  The Frites were the best I’ve had since I was in the south of France.  Their Profiteroles looked delicious, but I will have to wait until my next visit to try them.

Bluepoint Energy

BluePoint__0114webWe recently photographed Bluepoint Energy, an energy management company that provides Generators used in industrial buildings such as hospitals, manufacturing companies, education and government buildings.

We worked with Bluepoint Energy about two years ago when we first photographed a piece of their equipment for a Sacramento based magazine business.  We were pleased to be called back to photograph their new product, the Cogeneration, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP) which was about four times the size of the products we originally photographed.BluePoint__0019web

The machine is on a skid which had the dimensions of about 60′ x 40′ which created a huge challenge to light.  It took about an hour and a half for each shot to be positioned just right for lighting.  We used a mixture of strobe lighting and the available light coming from the skylights in the warehouse.

Working With Local Theater’s

korczaks-children-0115-webWe had the opportunity to work with and produce an upcoming performance poster for Theatreworks, a local theater production company that offers scholarships to disadvantage students aiming to promote the performing arts to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Korczak Children, is a story based on an orphanage in the Jewish ghetto during World War II.  We created a vintage feel for the photo concept by using a new background we developed with an oil based kraft translucent paper casting a very warm glow on the scene.
